I am often asked by clients if their fur babies can be included in their maternity or newborn session. The answer is always a resounding “YES”! Your dog, after all, was your first baby and is part of the family. We definitely want to include them. I thought I’d share some of my tips for capturing the best newborn photos with your Household Pets.

Our primary concern when photographing a newborn is always safety. Most images are captured as composites, meaning the baby is photographed and then removed from the scene before we bring in their furry sibling. This simply ensures that there is zero risks to your baby. Occasionally, depending on the demeanor of your dog we may photograph them together, but this is also done in an extremely safe manner.

Working with dogs can be similar to working with toddlers. It may take a bit of wrangling, some treats and a whole lot of patience. But ultimately I am certain I’ll be able to capture beautiful images for you. We keep a stash of dog treats, toys and even a crate in the studio just for your fur babies. We want their experience to be special too.

Typically we ask that mom arrive with baby at the beginning of the session. Most of our clients elect to add professional hair and makeup for their newborn sessions. So while my assistant and I begin photographing baby, mom gets to be pampered. Once mom is ready, typically two hours into the session, we invite dad to arrive with your fur baby. We let them get adjusted to the environment, get to know us and then add them into the photographs. We thoroughly clean after every session and take extra care to disinfect any areas your dog has been.
