One of the most common questions I hear from expectant parents is: “When should I book my newborn session?”Whether you’re planning ahead or holding your little one in your arms already, rest assured—there’s always time to create timeless portraits you’ll treasure forever.
In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about when to book newborn photos in Dallas, what to expect from the process, and why the timing—while helpful—should never be a stressor.

The best time to book your newborn session is during your second trimester. By this point in your pregnancy, you likely have a due date confirmed, and it gives us plenty of time to plan every detail of your session—from wardrobe and styling to heirloom artwork for your home.
Booking early also ensures availability. As a fine art photographer, I take on a limited number of newborn sessions each month to provide the highest level of personalized service. Reserving your spot in advance guarantees that I’ll be able to photograph your baby during that beautiful window of early life.
While I’ll photograph newborns at any age, the ideal window is between 7 and 14 days old. During this time, babies are typically sleepier and still enjoy being curled up in those sweet, squishy poses. It’s the perfect moment to capture the tiny details and fresh newness that fade so quickly.
But let me emphasize this: there is no “wrong” time to have your baby photographed.
If your baby is a few weeks (or even a few months!) old, I will still create beautiful, heartfelt images that reflect your family’s love and your baby’s unique personality.
Sometimes families need extra time to recover, adjust, or simply find the right moment—and that’s perfectly okay. I want you to know that whether your baby is brand new or a little more alert, our session will still be meaningful and magical.

When you reserve your session during pregnancy, we’ll have time to plan everything in advance through a personalized design consultation. During this visit, we’ll:
Tour the studio and explore prop, texture, and backdrop options
Select color palettes and themes that reflect your family’s style
Discuss any sentimental items you’d like to include
Coordinate wardrobe for your baby, siblings, and even parents
Talk through strategies for making the session relaxed and easy—especially if toddlers or siblings are involved
This is also where we’ll discuss hair and makeup services for mom, provided by my trusted professional artist Victoria Pepen Beauty. It’s such a lovely way to pamper yourself while I focus on capturing those first precious portraits of your baby.
All newborn sessions take place in my private Colleyville studio, designed with comfort, ease, and artistry in mind. From the moment you walk in, everything you need is here—gowns, wraps, props, even diapers. I’ve thought through every detail so you don’t have to.
Moms often tell me how relieved they feel knowing they can just arrive, relax, and trust me to take care of the rest. That’s exactly the experience I aim to provide. Whether you’re celebrating your very first baby or adding another sweet soul to your family, this moment deserves to be beautifully documented with care.
No worries at all! While earlier is often easier for those sleepy, curled-up images, I photograph babies at every stage and age. We’ll tailor the session to your baby’s temperament and milestones—whether they’re yawning peacefully or wide-eyed and curious.
If you’ve just welcomed your baby and didn’t get a chance to plan ahead, reach out anyway. I’ll always do my best to accommodate last-minute sessions whenever possible. The bottom line, when to book newborn photos is when you and baby are ready. I’ll make sure your images are beautiful at any stage.
