What to Wear for Maternity Photos: A Luxury Styling Guide

One of the questions I hear most often as a Dallas maternity photographer is:

“What should I wear for my maternity photos?”

The right wardrobe can completely transform a maternity portrait, turning a simple photograph into something timeless and artistic. The good news is that you don’t have to figure it out alone.

At Lindsay Walden Photography, every maternity session includes a design consultation and access to a curated wardrobe of over 200 gowns, carefully selected to photograph beautifully and flatter a growing baby bump.

Here is a guide to help you feel confident and radiant at your maternity session.

What to Wear for Maternity Photos: Choosing the Perfect Gown

One of the most beautiful elements in maternity photography is movement.

Flowing fabrics such as chiffon, silk, and tulle create a sense of softness and grace. When photographed with intentional lighting and posing, these fabrics add a dreamy quality that highlights the beauty of pregnancy.

Many of the gowns in our studio wardrobe feature:

• Long flowing trains
• Draped fabrics that accentuate the belly
• Soft layers that create movement
• Elegant silhouettes designed for maternity photography

These gowns photograph beautifully both in studio and underwater, creating images that feel artistic and timeless.

Colors That Photograph Beautifully

The color of your gown plays an important role in the final look of your portraits.

Soft neutrals and rich tones often photograph best. Some popular choices include:

• Cream and ivory for a timeless fine art look
• Soft pastels for a romantic feel
• Deep jewel tones for dramatic portraits
• Earth tones for organic outdoor sessions

During your design consultation, we will talk about the overall aesthetic you love so we can select wardrobe pieces that complement both your personal style and the final artwork.

Styling Makes All the Difference

Professional hair and makeup can elevate the entire experience and help you feel confident in front of the camera.

Many of my clients choose to add professional hair and makeup with my trusted artist, Victoria Pepen, who specializes in creating natural, camera-ready looks for maternity portraits.

Her artistry enhances your natural beauty while ensuring your makeup photographs beautifully under professional lighting.

This is one of the details that helps transform a maternity session into a luxury portrait experience rather than simply a photoshoot.

What Should Partners and Children Wear for Maternity Photos?

If your partner or children will be included in the session, coordinating wardrobe can help create a cohesive look.

Simple and timeless clothing tends to photograph best.

For partners, we often recommend:

• Neutral button-down shirts
• Soft sweaters
• Tailored jackets
• Simple earth tones or classic black

Children can wear soft textures and neutral tones that complement the mother’s gown without distracting from the overall composition. I have a collection of gowns for girls of all ages and suits and dapper outfits for boys up to age 5.

The goal is to create portraits that feel harmonious and elegant.

The Luxury of Not Having to Plan Everything Yourself

One of the most overwhelming parts of planning a photoshoot can be figuring out wardrobe.

That’s why I’ve spent years curating a collection of over 200 couture maternity gowns so that my clients can simply arrive and enjoy the experience.

During your design consultation, we will:

• Discuss the vision for your portraits
• Select gowns from the studio wardrobe
• Plan styling and hair and makeup
• Design artwork for your home

This process allows your maternity session to feel effortless, relaxed, and truly special.

When Should You Schedule Your Dallas Maternity Photos?

The ideal time for maternity portraits is typically between 28–34 weeks, when the baby bump is beautifully visible while you’re still comfortable enough to move easily during the session.

Because sessions are carefully planned and styled, it’s best to schedule your maternity session during the second trimester to ensure availability.
