Pregnancy is a transformative journey, both physically and emotionally. Finding the right kind of support can make all the difference. One of the most effective and empowering tools for expecting mothers is prenatal yoga. Colleyville prenatal yoga classes are becoming a sought-after way to stay strong, centered, and connected. We spoke with Diane, a certified instructor at Inspire Yoga, to learn more about how her thoughtfully designed prenatal yoga offerings help local moms feel more confident and supported throughout every stage of pregnancy.

About the Instructor / Studio

What inspired you to start offering prenatal yoga?

“I had done yoga during my pregnancy with my youngest (Cole) and saw the benefit it had not only during my pregnancy & delivery, but also in my recovery. I had a high risk pregnancy and it helped me maintain my peace of mind as well as keep my blood pressure in a healthy range. It also helped with things like swelling and discomfort in my ever changing body. I wanted other expectant mothers to also have those benefits and saw a lack of prenatal offerings in our area. There are plenty of studios in Dallas that offer prenatal, but not many/any here in the DFW area.”

How long have you been teaching Colleyville prenatal yoga, and what sets your prenatal yoga classes apart?

I have been teaching prenatal yoga at Inspire in both Grapevine & Colleyville for about 2 years now. We offer it as a month long (once a week) workshop quarterly, but also as private/group sessions as people request it. During our workshops, we focus each week on a different trimester:

  • 1st week is introduction, discussing limitations, and recommended movement during the 1st trimester
  • 2nd week we discuss 2nd trimester benefits and contraindicated postures. Changes you may experience in your body and how to navigate them during yoga as well as in every day life.
  • 3rd week we invite partners to come to class with you. We go over partner postures (massage, comfortable postures to ready your body for delivery, etc) and postures & positioning for 3rd trimester. This week is always a participant favorite!
  • 4th week we do some relaxation postures, focus on relaxing breathing, some meditation, and just ways to be gentle with yourself those final few weeks of pregnancy. As well as those early weeks of recovery after delivery.”

What is your studio’s philosophy when it comes to supporting expecting mothers?

We want mothers to feel supported and cared for throughout their pregnancy. They are amazing and capable and shouldn’t feel limited in their health as mobility during this special time. When expectant mothers come to our studio classes outside of our regular prenatal workshop, we make sure that they feel welcome and encouraged to participate to their comfort level in any class they come to, whether that means offering modifications, providing the appropriate props, or just letting them know that we see them and support them.

Benefits of Prenatal Yoga

What are the main benefits of prenatal yoga for expecting mothers?

There are so many benefits to doing prenatal yoga! It helps to build a mother’s flexibility, strength, and endurance while also helping to aid in relaxation and openness in the body that will be needed during all phases of their pregnancy & delivery. How do you tailor your Colleyville prenatal yoga classes for moms in different stages of pregnancy?

Can beginners or those new to yoga feel comfortable joining your prenatal classes?

“Absolutely! They’ll learn how to modify postures so accommodate their every changing bodies and as a bonus, they will leave feeling confident to be able to attend classes outside of the prenatal offering not only during their pregnancy but also after.”

How do you ensure the safety of participants in your prenatal yoga classes?

“Our prenatal focused classes are structured so that they are limited to 10 participants maximum so they receive a very focused instruction. There can be participants of all different stages in their pregnancy so this allows me to be able to accommodate and offer the proper modifications and adjustments that each person needs. We also clearly explain moving to your body’s comfort level- you live in your body so YOU know what is best- if something doesn’t feel right, scale back what you are doing, or stop. There is no judgement or expectation in our classes so you’ll never be made to feel bad if you just need to sit and breathe rather than moving your body. We also take our prenatal classes at a very slow, manageable pace.”

Are there any specific modifications or poses you emphasize or avoid in your prenatal yoga sessions?

“Each stage of pregnancy comes with its own limitations and adjustments, but some here are some things to keep in mind:

  • When doing standing poses such as Warrior, shorten up your stance. This allows you to feel more grounded in the pose and more stable on your feet.
  • Avoid lying flat on your back for extended periods of time, especially late in your pregnancy when your baby is becoming heavier and more fully developed. The weight of your baby & your uterus can put pressure on your inferior vena cava (IVC) thus cutting off blood flow back to your heart causing you to feel dizzy or even potentially pass out. So always have a support behind your back such as a bolster to keep your heart elevated and pressure off of the IVC.
  • Also a good tip to lie on your left side in resting positions so your heart doesn’t have to work so hard to get the blood to pump back to it.
  • Overall, just being gentle with yourself and not trying any crazy moves that you didn’t already have in your practice before becoming pregnant- now is not the time to decide to try out a crow or funky balance pose!”

How do you handle participants with pregnancy complications or special concerns?

“We ask that all participants disclose any special needs or concerns to us prior to attending class- regardless of it’s a prenatal class or not- an informed instructor is your best instructor! We don’t know what is going on in your body or how to offer proper instruction that speaks to your body if you don’t tell us what we are facing.

That being said, if we know what is happening in your body & with your pregnancy, we will do everything we can to accommodate you in the way you need. But walking into a class and expecting me, or whomever is teaching, to just know on the fly how to help/adjust isn’t always guaranteed to be doable. We are not doctors and if you have an issue that has special concerns, we just need to know that in advance, and sometimes that means we’ll advise against certain classes and/or request you instead consider doing a private session where your needs can specifically be addressed.”

What’s the atmosphere like in your prenatal yoga classes — do moms find community and connection here?

“Yes! During our first session we spend time introducing ourselves and discussing any specific joys or concerns they have, is it their first baby, etc. After one of my previous workshops, all of the moms who had just met in our class, signed up together for a local aqua class! So building a mom network and connections is most definitely something we encourage and try to nurture.”

How should someone prepare for their first prenatal yoga class?

Be pregnant! Lol Sign up. And show up! It’s really that simple. We have all the supportive props you need for class, we even have mats you can use; though if you have your own, bring it along! Bring water and wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.”

What is the most rewarding part of leading prenatal yoga?

Seeing moms connect with their bodies and their growing baby! Knowing that they are doing this not only for their own wellbeing but also for their baby’s. I also love seeing the partners show up on partner week. The connection they make during their practice, whether they are their life partner, parent, or friend, is so fun to see. The way they support each other, but also have fun- it’s just fantastic!”

Do you have any advice for moms considering adding prenatal yoga to their pregnancy journey?

Do it! Find yourself a certified prenatal instructor and take a class. It’s important to be sure that the teacher you are working with has experience and knowledge to lead you and your baby trough a practice. Not every teacher has the knowledge to guide you safely, so if you feel they aren’t knowledgable, listen to your instincts and find someone else. Don’t overdo it and really listen to what your baby and your body need! Have fun and enjoy this special time in your life!
