Preparing Older Siblings for Photos with a New Baby

One of the questions I hear most often from parents expecting their second, third, or fourth child is:

“What if my older child doesn’t cooperate during newborn photos?”

The good news is that you don’t need to worry about having a perfectly behaved toddler or preschooler to create beautiful family images. In fact, helping children feel comfortable, confident, and excited about their session is an important part of my process.

When it comes to preparing older siblings for photos with a new baby, a little planning goes a long way. That’s why we begin every newborn experience with a design consultation long before your session day arrives.

Preparing Older Siblings for Photos with a New Baby Starts Before the Session

During your design consultation, I love getting to know your family.

We’ll talk about your children, their personalities, and what makes them smile. Are they outgoing and energetic? Shy and cautious? Do they love superheroes, princesses, animals, or trucks? What helps them feel comfortable in new situations?

We’ll also talk about how they feel about becoming a big brother or sister. Some children are thrilled about the new baby, while others may need a little extra reassurance and attention. Understanding these dynamics helps me tailor the session to your family.

We’ll also plan wardrobe for everyone. I have a beautiful collection of dresses for girls and adorable options for little boys, along with wardrobe for mom and baby. Everything is designed to coordinate beautifully so you don’t have to stress about shopping for outfits or wondering what will photograph well.

Making Session Day Easy for Parents

One of the biggest ways we help families is by structuring the session around the needs of young children.

When you arrive at the studio, we’ll begin photographing your newborn while you relax and enjoy professional hair and makeup. During this time, we’ll capture all of baby’s individual portraits, allowing us to focus completely on your newest little one.

Rather than expecting older siblings to sit through a lengthy newborn session, they typically arrive about two hours later, once we’re finished photographing baby alone.

This means less waiting, less boredom, and a much happier experience for everyone.

By the time siblings arrive, we’re ready to focus on family portraits, sibling images, and parent portraits together.

We Never Rush Children

Every child is different.

Some walk into the studio ready to smile and pose. Others need a little time to warm up.

That’s completely normal.

If your child wants to sit and observe for a few minutes, that’s okay. If they want to play a game, tell me about their favorite dinosaur, sing a song, or show me how fast they can run, we’ll do that too.

The goal is never to force a smile.

The goal is to help your child feel comfortable enough for genuine moments to happen naturally.

Some of the most meaningful images come from a quiet cuddle, a curious glance at baby, or a spontaneous laugh that happens when children feel safe and relaxed.

Safety Always Comes First

When preparing older siblings for photos with a new baby, safety is always our top priority.

Many sibling portraits can be created safely with children holding or interacting with baby under close supervision. However, there are times when a composite image is the safest option.

A composite allows us to photograph baby and sibling separately and then artistically combine the images afterward.

For example, one of my favorite images features a baby resting peacefully in a stroller while an older sibling appears to be pushing it. The final image looks seamless, but it was created from multiple photographs to ensure baby’s safety at every step.

This approach allows us to create beautiful artwork while giving parents complete peace of mind.

Capturing More Than One Sibling Portrait

Children often have different comfort levels throughout a session, which is why I like to create a variety of images whenever possible.

We’ll capture sibling portraits, family portraits, parent-and-baby images, and often individual photographs of older siblings as well.

Sometimes the image parents end up loving most isn’t the one they expected.

By creating a variety of portraits, you’ll have beautiful options that celebrate not only your new baby, but this special season of your family’s story.
