Over the past several years, I have photographed hundreds of parents with their newborn babies.  As a mother myself to three children I have come to appreciate the importance for parents, and mothers especially, to be present in photographs with their children.

I remember looking through a series of photos from a family trip to the beach with my then young children. We perused photo after photo of my children individually or with my husband. Then my daughter asks, “Why weren’t you there mom?” I was taken aback. I was there holding her little chubby hand in mine as we strolled along the beach. I lovingly rubbed sunscreen on her cute cheeks multiple times each day. We snuggled and loved on each other and built sand castles. And I took a ton of beautiful images of my family to preserve our memories. But I was not in any of them. And she was too young to remember all that time together. Her only memories were those created by hearing our stories from the trip as we viewed the images together.

Being a photographer means I have a hard time letting go of that artistic duty and trusting someone else to capture moments in my life. Being a woman means I have a natural disposition to avoid being in front of the camera (especially in a bathing suit!). So in my younger years as a parent I avoided it like the plague. But I’ve since learned how essential it is to be present in photos with my children. To show them that I was there throughout their lives loving and supporting them.

All of my newborn sessions include parent and sibling images. I recognize that right after having a baby is not a moment in most women’s lives when they are jumping at the opportunity to get in front of a camera. I am mindful of that and everything I do is geared towards helping that new mama feel absolutely beautiful. From professional hair and make-up to flattering light and angles, I make sure every mom will love that first beautiful professional picture with her new baby.

Photos to Remember

More importantly I remind these expectant parents that while their favorite image from the session may be a beautifully styled artistic image or a cute squishy baby shot, their child’s favorite image when they are older will be the one with them.  These images are more than a quick Facebook post. They are for your children and your grandchildren and generations beyond and a way for them to connect with and remember you.

When I photograph my client families, my goal is for their love for this tiny little person that is their whole world to be captured in print and preserved for hundreds of years.  Like I do with my own children, I want these families to be able to sit down together over the years, share the photos together and talk about how much they mean to each other and how much their love has grown.

Can you see the love these families have for their children?  Can you feel the protective nature of it?  I sure can, which is one of the plethora of reasons why I am so thankful that I am a maternity, newborn photographer near cedar park and have reached this milestone. Capturing these connections that mean more to us than anything else is incredibly rewarding.
